How to Meet New People

How to Meet New People

8 Tips

Meeting new people and making friends as an adult can be a real challenge. You usually already have a group of friends, and very little free time, so most people aren’t looking to meet someone new. So, what do you do when you drift apart from your friends, or you move to a new city? Here are some tips for meeting new people!

1. Don’t Miss Events

Say yes when a friend invites you to a party or an event, and don’t skip your coworker’s invitations to hang out after work! These are great opportunities to get to know someone better or meet someone new. The best part is that these are arranged beforehand, and all you have to do is show up. This is an effortless way to meet people!

2. Join a Club

You probably have an interest or a hobby. Find a club dedicated to your hobby, and you’ll meet new people who share your interests! It might take you a couple of tries to find a club that’s the right fit for you, but don’t give up! If you can’t find a club you like, start your own!

3. Volunteer

Volunteering your time is a great thing to do all around. You’re helping people, making the world a better place, you’ll feel better about yourself, and you have a chance to meet some great, like-minded individuals. Volunteer in areas you’re most passionate about, there are a ton of options to choose from.

4. Talk to Strangers

Try starting a conversation with a stranger the next time you find yourself in public. It might seem uncomfortable at first, but it will get easier in time. Have a few conversation starters ready. You can try it anywhere; on a bus/train, while waiting in line, in a coffee shop… Look for a person that looks a bit bored, and isn’t otherwise engaged.

5. Stay Confident

Be calm and confident when approaching someone new. Being nervous might make you come off as creepy or shifty. Pay attention to your body language; you should stand straight and maintain eye contact. Avoid looking down or checking yourself in reflective surfaces too much. Talk about subjects you love and have knowledge about, and you’ll feel more at ease.

6. Take a Class

Taking a class and learning something new is fun, rewarding, and a great opportunity for meeting new people who have similar interests. Take an art class, cooking class, or any kind of class, and make it a point to talk to the people around you. In the worst case scenario, you’ll at least leave with a valuable new skill.

7. Get a Dog

Obviously, you shouldn’t get a dog just to meet people – this tip is for dog lovers only! Walking your dog and going to the vet are great ways to meet new people. A lot of people love dogs and will stop to ask about them. Other dogs will get curious as well, giving you an opportunity to meet and chat with their guardians!

8. Meet People Online

You’ve heard about online dating sites, but did you know that there are similar sites for making friends as well? You just fill out a profile, and you’ll be matched to people with similar interests! If you prefer a more casual approach, join an interesting forum or talk to people on social media sites.

Try the above tips, we would love to get your feedback!
